As Mormon missionaries have rolled out their gospel to the world in the coming months, the Mormon Church has stepped up its rhetoric in its defense of its religion.
The church has also ramped up its efforts to spread the gospel, including a new billboard campaign that aims to portray Mormons as a more open, tolerant, and progressive group.
The Mormon Church, which has been fighting a Mormon ban on gay marriage, is pushing a new ad campaign called “God is in the Bible” that is running across the country in California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Idaho, among other states.
The ad depicts the biblical story of Cain, the first man to fall in love with a woman, and his son Abel, a man who had fallen in love again with a prostitute.
Cain was saved by his brother Abel and became the first patriarch.
The other patriarchs were all killed in the Flood.
The new ad uses the biblical narrative to explain why the church should not allow gay marriage.
“If God is the father of our Savior, He loves us and does not allow us to marry the opposite sex,” the narrator says.
“It’s a terrible sin.”
The ad features several gay couples who embrace each other and hug.
One couple says they have had to be taught to respect each other’s feelings, but have not been able to reconcile their love for one another, the Associated Press reported.
“The Mormon church believes marriage is the union of a man and a woman,” a Mormon spokesman said.
“In their view, it’s an irrevocable covenant between two people.”
The new “God in the Bibles” ad has been in the works for some time, and was commissioned by the church’s flagship megachurch, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which serves as the governing body of the church.
The video uses the Bible as a teaching tool and explains that it is “the one book we are given” that defines God.
“I am the Lord, and I will be the Judge,” the ad says.
The narrator of the video said the ad was inspired by a recent trip he took to the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“A couple of years ago, we went to visit our family.
They wanted to go, too,” the announcer said.
“[My wife] is not comfortable going to church.
She was a very conservative person.
So we sat down, we had tea and cookies, and we talked about our faith.
And I said, ‘I’ve got this big question for you, because I think the Mormon faith is the best faith I’ve ever heard of, and this is the only faith that really fits your needs.'”
The narrator said he had met many Mormons who would never date or marry someone of the same gender.
“They would never marry someone with the same sex,” he said.
He then quoted scripture to explain that God created Adam and Eve “without a second thought.”
“Adam and Eve were created with the ability to be creative.
So they did not have a second, third thought,” the Mormon narrator said.
A Mormon church spokesman did not immediately respond to an email from The Huffington Post seeking comment.
“God was in the book” for all of creation.
The New York Times’ David Maraniss said that the church “has a big problem” with gay people, and that “the church has never been very good at accepting gays.”
“Mormons are not accepting of gay people,” Maranis reported.
The billboard campaign will run in California and Arizona for the next two weeks, Maraninsaid.
The Mormons have faced a number of criticisms in the past for being overly aggressive in its efforts for acceptance.
In 2016, the church lost a landmark case to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
A jury in Utah ruled that the Mormon church’s ban on same-gender marriage violated the U.S. Constitution, and the Mormon leaders were forced to drop the case.
But the Mormon leadership’s efforts to promote the church and the church-run TV station are part of a broader push to recruit new members to the faith.
Last year, the LDS Church approved an executive order that required all congregations to use gender-neutral pronouns when using the term “sister,” which was a significant step in a decades-long effort to change how the church is perceived by the general public.
This year, President Thomas S. Monson has urged members to “become more accepting and tolerant,” and he said in an interview with “60 Minutes” that Mormons have been a “safer” group.
“As you’ve probably heard, we’ve had a lot of changes, a lot more change in the last 10 years.
There’s a lot better visibility for the church,” Monson said.
